The 69th New York was one of 5 regiments in the well known Irish Brigade along with the 63rd and 88th New York, 28th Massachusetts, and the 116 Pennsylvania,
about 1200 men total. The only flags in the brigade belonged to the newly transferred 28th Mass, the green flags of the other regiments were too shot up
following the Battle of Antietam and had been retired in anticipation of the issue of new ones. Clumps of Virginia Boxwood were handed out by the regimental
staff and the men put sprigs in their caps so they could still fight under the green.
The brigade had passed through the town of Fredericksburg, over an open area and then crossed a canal and formed lines of battle, all under the effects of artillery fire. Before them was the gentle slope that lead to Marye's Heights and a stone wall just short of the crest that protected the Confederate infantry. Theirs would be the third assault on this position and the slope was covered with sky blue forms both crawling to the rear and remaining motionless in death. Up this slope they went to cries of "Faugh-a-Ballagh"(Clear the Way) by the 28th Mass in the center of the line. Forward into what one observer called a slaughter pen. Artillery and musket fire decimated them. Men of the 88th NY got within a few yards of the stone wall but the attack would prove futile and was driven back with 545 casualties to the brigade.
