Confederate Napoleon 12-Pounder???

I have a gun and crew and want to upgrade their uniforms to represent a specific group, but want to make sure that unit used the 12-pounder. I was going to do the Portsmouth Artillery (Light) Battery (Grimes Battery) or the Norfolk Artillery (Light) Battery (Grandy Battery) but can't find what kind of howitzers they used. I might have to go with the 1st Richmond Howitzers. Here's a photo I found of the Norfolk Light Artillery Blues re-enactor group. I like these uniforms, but the caps I have are the BGT Richmond Howitzer caps (blue band vice red, can these be painted?): Smell the plastic

So I wanted to say. "yes, I hear your questions, no, I don't know of a source and yes, I have had some success in repainting the SST kepi." But now that I think about it, you were probably asking about BGT's kepi. I've never tried to paint those before. I guess I shouldn't have written anything. I didn't want you to think you were alone in a powder magazine with a cigarette and a zippo... :-) ~k

Two books, "Canoneers in Grey" has charts that will answer this for the Army of Tennessee and "The long Arm of Lee" covers the Army of Northern Virginia. Both should be available through inter-library loan.

But as for painting cloth, I've been experimenting with painting stripes on blankets, and I've had some success with fabric paint from Michaels. The come in little bottles or, as I've been trying, marker pens with broad tips. It depends on what color you're using and what you're trying to cover. I've had success with a yellow stripe on gray wool, but orange doesn't cover dark blue too good. I plan on trying some acrylic fabric paint in an airbrush. Find something you can experiment on - this stuff is too dear to booger it up on my say-so! Good luck. Mark

Then add the other color. It will look much better. Dubar- after checking out the Richmond kepi on BGT's site I would recomend buying the red ones and painting the blue on the bottom. I can't say for certain which units used what, but the light 12 pounder was the most common in use. There is a website called "civil war artillery", not sure of the web page, but it goes into detail of the types used, just not the units who used them. Alot of cannons were also captured from the enemy and put into use. I don't think using a 12 pounder for any unit you choose would necessarily be incorrect. As far as painting the battlegear kepi's, I've used water based paints and had success. If you go to echoes of glory and look at some of the kepi's some were painted anyway. I painted a gray one red and it took two coats of paint. You can't even tell it was painted. Richard

I should have looked in my internet favorites before I posted. I found at least one unit that used the Napoleon 12-pounder in this writeup: VA UNITS Looks like I need to buy another round of kepis, this time grey with the red band. You're right, it would be easier than trying to paint the ones I have. The Norfolk Light Artillery Blues (Huger Battery) received (2) 12-pounders later in the war. I wanted to do the Grimes Battery from Portsmouth (where I live) but couldn't determine which guns they used. Smell the plastic
